Not all car terms are clear, even for auto enthusiasts. While you don’t necessarily need to know every auto word in the book when shopping for or operating a car, knowing the basics can’t hurt.

To help decipher automotive jargon, the experts at Tom Wood Subaru have broken down some of the most complex industry terms:

?       All-wheel drive: A permanent, four-wheel drive system designed for improved traction on all surfaces and at all times.

?       Four-wheel drive: A part-time system that powers all four wheels for improved traction during adverse road conditions and off-road use.

?       Turbocharged: a small device that increases power output and an internal combustion engine's efficiency.

?       Gasket: Gaskets are literally everywhere in your vehicle and gaskets provide a proper seal between the parts in your vehicle.

?       Horsepower (or “hp”): a unit of power to measure a vehicle’s engine. It is the power needed to move 33,000 pounds a distance of one foot in one minute.

?       Chassis: the physical frame of a vehicle. The chassis holds together all of the vehicle’s components.

?       Diffuser: a section of a vehicle’s underbody that functions to improve the car's aerodynamic properties. This device allows the car to travel faster through corners.

?       Spoiler: an aerodynamic device that functions to 'spoil' adverse air movement.

?       Powertrain: The combination of the engine, transmission and axles that deliver power to the wheels.
