Subaru Outback Engine & Performance Specs

Unless the model becomes an EV, the Subaru Outback specs will likely always be BOXER engine-based. Indeed, this SUV takes a different approach to cylinder layouts than most other vehicles, placing them on their side, rather than in a line or a V formation. The result is a bit of magic that current Subaru drivers know well: A smoother application of power than inline or V engines, as each piston stroke directly cancels out a major portion of vibrations caused by the opposing piston stroke.

Plus, it makes a throatier, more spirited noise than most inline engines put out. On top of that, it's also incredibly efficient! In the 2025 Outback, this horizontally-opposed package comes in two forms:

  • 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER: standard on most trims; makes 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque and tows up to 2,700 pounds1
  • 2.4-liter Turbocharged SUBARU BOXER: standard on XT models and Wilderness trim; makes 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque and tows up to 3,500 pounds1

Symmetrical AWD is the default – and only – option for the Outback SUV's drivetrain, as is tradition. The Subaru Outback transmission is a continuously variable transmission in all configurations, though it can also be controlled manually and shifted through eight simulated gear ratios.

The Subaru Outback MPG ratings are as follows:

  • EPA-estimated 26/32 MPG (City/Highway)2 with 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER engine
  • EPA-estimated 22/29 MPG (City/Highway)2 with 2.4-liter Turbo SUBARU BOXER engine (XT variants)
  • EPA-estimated 21/26 MPG (City/Highway)2 with 2.4-liter Turbo SUBARU BOXER engine (Wilderness trim)

All 2025 Outback models have an 18.5-gallon fuel tank, allowing for plenty of adventurous driving between each fill-up. And as a final entry into the performance-based Subaru Outback specs, the standard engine allows for an 8.5-second 0-60 mph time,3 while the turbo upgrade launches the Outback from zero to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds.3

Subaru Outback Exterior and Interior

Subaru Outback Dimensions & Interior Room

Size is another reason that the Outback is so popular. As a compelling member of the midsize crossover segment, the Subaru Outback specs balance the interior space and highway stability drivers want from larger automobiles with the agile and precise demeanor of a smaller SUV. These measurements demonstrate this design ethos:

  • 191.2 inches long
  • 74.2 to 74.4 inches wide
  • 66.1 to 66.9 inches tall

Moving inside, the Subaru Outback cargo space fits 32.6 cubic feet of stuff. That, though, is just behind the rear seats. Lower them, and your Outback will give you 75.6 cubic feet of cargo room. If you need to bring more, the Subaru Outback towing capacity can generally handle a small enclosed cargo trailer.

Beyond storage space, the Subaru Outback interior measurements include the following specs:

  • Up to 109 cubic feet of passenger room
  • Up to 40.1 inches of headroom, 58.1 inches of shoulder room, and 42.8 inches of legroom for the front seats
  • 39.1 inches of headroom, 57.4 inches of shoulder room, and 39.5 inches of legroom for the rear seats

Subaru Outback Ground Clearance & Off-Road Specs

Complementing the standard Symmetrical AWD, the Outback has 8.7 inches of ground clearance to let you ride over a wide range of terrain obstacles. For deeper trail exploration, the Wilderness variant offers 9.5 inches of ground clearance (alongside many other off-road upgrades). All models contain a serious suite of off-road capability features. If you lease a Subaru Outback in the Base trim level, for example, you'll get technologies like X-MODE and Hill Descent Control.

The Wilderness iteration, however, offers the most powerful and capable Subaru Outback specs, including these upgrades:

  • Yokohama GEOLANDAR all-terrain tires
  • 17-inch matte black off-road alloy wheels
  • Full-size spare tire
  • Revised transmission gearing for low-speed hill climbing
  • Enhanced Dual-Function X-MODE
  • Strengthened roof rails
  • 180-Degree Front-View Monitor
  • Front skid plate
  • High-clearance front and rear bumpers

Subaru Outback Safety Rating

The new Subaru Outback provides the confidence of an IIHS Top Safety Pick award4 and a five-star Overall Safety Rating from the NHTSA.5 Enough said. But, for good measure, here are the key Subaru EyeSight safety features included with every 2025 Outback:

  • Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering
  • Automatic Emergency Steering
  • Lane Departure and Sway Warning
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Pre-Collision Braking

That's not all, though, as the Outback has available upgrades like Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist, Reverse Automatic Braking, the DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System, and more.

Will the 2026 Subaru Outback Specs be Different?

The 2026 Outback will arrive at our Subaru dealer in Indianapolis, IN, sometime in late 2025 boasting new style, features, and more. The core specs and general spirit of the 2026 Subaru Outback, however, will not be much of a departure from the popular 2025 Outback.

For example, both the 2025 and 2026 Outback have 8.7 inches of standard ground clearance and an available turbocharged engine with 260 horsepower. Details like the standard engine's horsepower are slightly different (180 vs. 182), but overall, the 2026 Outback will retain all the great aspects of the 2025 model. Full specs and features will be announced soon. Please contact us to register your interest and stay in the loop, or set up a test drive of the currently available 2025 Subaru Outback today.
